What’s Keeping You Up at Night?

Dear Friend,

We all need a decent amount of sleep in order to handle our days so if there’s something keeping you up at night then it’s important to find out what it is and take steps to rectify the situation.

There are many common reasons for insomnia or the ability to get a good night’s sleep:

  • Hormonal changes – menopause, menstruation, pregnancy – hormone imbalances can affect sleep patterns – if it’s an ongoing issue with no clear reason then it’s advised that you seek medical advice.
  • Medical conditions – asthma, colds, flu, heart conditions can make sleeping difficult – have a chat to your medical practitioner.
  • Shift work – working at night, or a constantly changing work routine can cause upset to the body’s circadian rhythm causing it to be difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
  • Jet lag – trying to sleep when it’s light outside can be difficult. Stick to your normal routine as much as possible and allow your body time to catch up – luckily this isn’t usually a problem that lasts beyond a few days.
  • Snoring – either yours or your partner’s. There are many options so if snoring is disturbing your sleep perhaps it’s time you researched a few.
  • Pain – back pain, headaches and jaw muscle problems are the leading causes of sleep loss.
  • Drug use – illicit, prescription and over-the-counter can all inhibit your ability to sleep – discuss these issues with your medical practitioner – there may be a way they can help.
  • Mental illness or stress – insomnia is a symptom of and cause of depression and anxiety, seek medical advice if you are concerned in any way.

And then there’s just worrying. When we have questions circling around and around inside our head it can disrupt our ability to relax and inhibit peaceful, rejuvenating sleep.
